The need of the Campaign

As per the current counts, India has 62 million heart patients. The percentage of people having heart disease has increased from 1-2 to 3-5 per cent in rural India and from 2-3 to 10-11 per cent in urban India. This represents an overall increase of 300 per cent over the past 30 years. Heart disease is now the world's leading cause of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year. India has seen a rapid transition in its heart disease burden over the past couple of decades, while the rest of the developing world is now seeing a decrease through education and prevention awareness.

How can we combat this completely eradicable epidemic? If this current trend continues, by the year 2020, the burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in India will surpass that of any other country in the world, and we will become the global capital of cardiovascular diseases (currently we are). Heart Attack is the biggest widow maker of our nation, and it now very prominently attacking the young middle income class families. Incidences of heart attacks not only shatter the dreams of the children of the families affected, and increase their financial burdens, but even the survivors lose their overall life quality, earning capacity and live with a heavy chest for the rest of their lives.

Today, cardiac hospitals in India perform over 200,000 open heart surgeries every year, one of the highest, worldwide. There has been a steady annual rise to the tune of 25-30 per cent per year in the number of coronary interventions over the past several years. Surgeries not only prove huge financial burdens to the victim and his families but also limit his ability to work and earn. Together, we can change all this. All we need is a vaccine, a time tested vaccine to live right and earn good cardiac health. We call this vaccine as “Edu Vaccine,” an education programme to restructure our lifestyle to make our heart healthy and to enjoy the fruits of healthy life.
